MEMBERS OF CONGRESS ADDRESS SENIOR CITIZENS AT TOWN
HALL MEETING ON MEDICARE
On February 7, 2002, AIM hosted a Medicare Town Hall event
to announce the results of a nationwide survey on Medicare and to discuss the need to improve and strengthen the Medicare program. AIM spokesman, former U.S. Representative Tim Penny, was joined by Senators Bill Frist ( R-TN), John Breaux (D-LA), and Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Representative Michael Bilirakis ( R-FL) for a discussion with over 60 seniors citizens from Virginia, Maryland, Iowa, Montana, and the District of Columbia.
Congressman Penny shared recent findings of the AIM-sponsored
RoperASW survey on what Americans think about the current Medicare program and how they think it should be improved. Specifically, 68 percent of Americans between the ages of 35 and 49 say that Medicare say
that Medicare will not have the resources to cover paper boomers.
Senators Frist, Breaux, and Wyden and Representative Bilirakis
addressed the senior citizens and expressed a collective desire to approve some form of Medicare prescription drug benefit this year. Senators Chuck Grassley ( R-IA) and Olympia Snowe ( R-ME) were unable to
attend the Town Hall event but provided statements in support of AIM's effort.
The event also kicked off AIM's nationwide campaign to generate
support for bipartisan legislative action to improve and strengthen Medicare. The campaign is supported by the actor Ossie Davis who provided a recorded video for the Town Hall and who has recorded radio
announcements to be used nationwide. (Mr. Davis' video and radio audio can be accessed below).
